  • The best-selling novel by Michael Crichton was faithfully adapted for this taut 1971 thriller, about a team of scientists racing against time to destroy a deadly alien virus that threatens to wipe out life on Earth. As usual with any Crichton-based movie, the emphasis is on an exciting clash between nature and science, beginning when virologists discover the outer-space virus in a tiny town full of corpses. Projecting total contamination, the scientists isolate the deadly strain in a massive, high-tech underground lab facility, which is rigged for nuclear destruction if the virus is not successfully controlled. The movie spends a great deal of time covering the scientific procedures of the high-pressure investigation, and the rising tensions between scientists who have been forced to work in claustrophobic conditions. It's all very fascinating if you're interested in scientific method and technological advances, although the film is obviously dated in many of its details. It's more effective as a thriller in which tension is derived not only from the deadly threat of the virus, but from the escalating fear and anxiety among the small group of people who've been assigned to save the human race. The basic premise is still captivating; it's easy to see how this became the foundation of Crichton's science-thriller empire. --Jeff Shannon

Customer reviews for The Andromeda Strain:

  • Andromeda Strain (2008-12-24)
  • Sometimes when someone wants to update an older movie they try to add things. What was added here was hokey. The original book and movie made it seem like something like this could actually happen but this version introduced black holes and time travel and instead turned into a television version of a B movie. What made the original movie a classic was the writing. When updating don't get carried away, keep it simple stupid! If I had know the new version would have turned out like this I would not have bought it. This is a rental not a keeper.

  • Silver Iodine Cloud Seeding (2008-11-28)
  • 1. Dr. Jeremy stone is retrieved by the US Air force because a wildfire is brewing.
    2. Communications by Mrs. Stone to her father are broken for national security reasons.
    3. Jeremy Stone open documentation on the Scoop mission
    4. Dr Robinson is in charge of the Nations science project.
    5. The citizens of piedmont are dead or dying. Their blood has dried up.
    6. The military decision is to quadrant off the area, instead of destroying the area by thermonuclear denotation, order 712.
    7. No MCM communications have been routed to the Wildfire facility.
    8. Wildfire facility is equipped for a nuclear denotation. The odd man alone can arm the weapon with his key. Only the odd man can override detonation.
    9. Hand print access, five levels of bacterial decontamination, and gastro intestinal decontamination prior to examination of a child and a old man, who have survived the catastrophe.
    10. The infection in the vial killed the rat and the monkey within seconds. Ruth wants to isolate and identify.
    11. The infection agent is 2 microns in size, black rock with properties like plastic and the green composed of basic elements necessary for life on earth. No amino acids and enzymes, yet the organism is alive and foreign and lethal
    12. A phantom fighter plane and pilot was destroyed by an organism that completely consumes all the plastic and the pilot.
    13. Andromeda strain is a crystal and can consume anything. Andromeda converts energy to matter, energy for growth. All the molecules appear to be the same. Andromeda can divide and mutate at the same time.
    14. Wildfire was intended to use as a biological warfare. The strain was man-made.
    15. Andromeda can only exist within a narrow range of Ph, too acidic or alkaline, the pattern of the crying baby or the old man on diabetic medicine.
    16. Andromeda eats the gaskets and compromises level 5 and auto destruction by the computer starts. Andromeda could mutate into a thousand forms.
    17. Self destruct has been canceled.

  • SCIENCE FICTION CLASSIC (2008-11-04)
  • THIS IS A GREAT ADAPTATION OF THE MICHAEL CRIGHTON CLASSIC SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL...THE MOVIE IS CERTAINLY DATED BECAUSE OF THE OLD TIMEY SPECIAL EFFECTS, BUT IT FAITHFULLY FOLLOWS THE BOOK...I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE I BOUGHT THE MINI-SERIES AND WANTED TO VIEW BOTH TO COMPARE HOW THEY HAVE HELD UP TO CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY...SO...IF YOU'RE A FAN OF SCIENCE-FICTION GET BOTH AND COMPARE/CONTRAST THE OLD WITH THE NEW...I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE WHO BUYS THIS MOVIE READ THE BOOK AND SEE FOR YOURSELF

  • Good - but dated (2008-09-08)
  • This is a good story, but it is an old film and lacking in special effects. Also, I didn't feel there was much sense of drama or suspense. Almost the entire film takes place an a hidden lab. There is one semi-dramatic scene toward the end involving a fail-safe procedure. But you kind of get the sense that everything is NOT going to do to hell, so....
Basically, don't expect anything like Jurrasic Park.

The interview with Michael Chriton, which reveals his personal background as it relates to his writing career, is a positive addition.

  • Sci Fi at its Best (2008-08-14)
  • Made in the 70's, this movie still has the suspense and good acting as it did when it was first released. Moreover, the film does a masterful job of staying close to the book. Indeed, having read the book, I feel I can make this statement with a clear conscience. Whether the newer made for TV version of the Michael Crichton book is better, I will leave for the younger reader to decide
